Colorado HVAC Rebates and Tax Credits
Every rebate program that touches a Thornton or north Denver home in one place, sorted by who bills your power and by how the money actually reaches you, because eligibility is decided by your utility and not by the equipment you like best.
Start With the Utility on Your Bill, Not the Equipment Brochure
A Colorado heat pump rebate is not one program. It is several, run by different utilities and the state, each with its own eligibility rules, its own efficiency requirements, and its own paperwork. Homeowners on a rural electric co-op are regularly pointed at Xcel Energy forms that will never apply to their address.
So the first question on any high-efficiency upgrade is simple: who bills your electricity, and who bills your gas? Pull out the statement before you shop. From there the picture gets clear fast.
- Most of Thornton, Northglenn, Denver, Federal Heights, Broomfield, and the surrounding Adams and Jefferson county neighborhoods are on Xcel Energy for electric, gas, or both.
- Parts of Brighton, Erie, and the Adams and Weld county stretch north and east of us are served by United Power, a member-owned electric cooperative with its own separate rebate catalog.
- Power Ahead Colorado runs through participating contractors rather than through your utility account, so you reach it by choosing a contractor who is enrolled.
- The Colorado heat pump tax credit is claimed by a contractor registered with the Colorado Energy Office, not by you, so it works differently from every program above it on this list.
Dollar amounts, qualifying equipment lists, and program windows change from year to year, so treat every figure below as the shape of the program rather than a quote. We confirm what your specific address and equipment qualify for as part of a free estimate.
Two Ways Rebate Money Reaches You, and Why the Difference Matters
Homeowners comparing programs usually assume a bigger rebate is a better rebate. The more useful question is how the money gets to you, because that decides what you write a check for on install day and what arrives afterward. There are two mechanics, and one is not better than the other once you see the math.
Money that comes off the invoice on install day:
- Xcel Energy rebates. We file the paperwork and take the rebate off your price up front as a discount, then collect the reimbursement from Xcel ourselves. You never wait on it.
- The Colorado heat pump tax credit, when a homeowner works with a contractor registered with the Colorado Energy Office. That program requires the registered contractor to pass at least a third of the credit through as an itemized discount on the invoice.
Money paid to you by the program after the install:
- Power Ahead Colorado. The rebate is issued to you directly rather than routed through us, so it lands on top of what you paid rather than inside it.
- United Power rebates, which are paid to the member by the co-op.
Here is why the Power Ahead structure is worth understanding rather than worrying about. If we showed that rebate as an instant discount, we would have to add its value to the price first and then subtract it back out, and the net you actually pay would not change. Leaving it off the invoice keeps your quote honest at the real bottom line and lets the program money come to you on top of it. On Xcel Energy, Power Ahead Colorado, and United Power rebates, we do the paperwork either way.
Xcel Energy Residential Rebates for Heat Pumps and Furnaces
Xcel Energy runs the largest set of residential HVAC incentives in our service area, and for most homes in Thornton, Northglenn, Commerce City, Federal Heights, Denver, and Broomfield it is the program that does the most work on the final number.
Xcel Energy heat pump rebates
Who is eligible: Xcel Energy residential electric customers replacing or adding heating and cooling equipment at an existing home. Income-qualified households may be eligible for enhanced incentive levels well above the standard rebate.
What qualifies: air source heat pumps, cold-climate heat pumps, ductless mini split systems, and ground source systems that meet the program's efficiency and low-temperature performance specifications. Cold-climate rated equipment sits at the top of the incentive scale because it is the equipment that actually holds temperature through a Front Range January.
What it is worth: rebates on a qualifying heat pump project commonly land between $900 and $2,250 or more per heating ton, with cold-climate systems reaching the upper end. On a typical whole-home replacement that is thousands of dollars off the installed price, not a token check.
How the money reaches you: up front, as an instant discount. We confirm eligibility and equipment before the system is ordered, document the install, file the application with the invoice and model numbers the program requires, and take the rebate off your price on install day. Recovering it from Xcel is our problem, not yours.
Xcel Energy furnace rebates
Who is eligible: Xcel Energy natural gas customers replacing an existing furnace.
What qualifies: this is where the efficiency rating decides everything. High-efficiency gas furnaces in the roughly 90% to 97% AFUE range typically qualify, while an 80% AFUE furnace typically does not. That single line is often the deciding factor between two quotes sitting on a homeowner's kitchen table, because the rebate can close most of the gap between a standard-efficiency and a high-efficiency furnace.
What it is worth: furnace incentives are smaller than heat pump incentives, and the amount depends on the AFUE rating and the program year.
How the money reaches you: the same way as the heat pump rebate. We verify the model qualifies before it is ordered, file with the install documentation, and apply the rebate as a discount on your invoice.
Power Ahead Colorado, and How We Start It for You
We are an enrolled Power Ahead Colorado participating contractor, which is the part homeowners cannot do on their own. The program is reached through a contractor, so it is easy to miss entirely when you are working through program websites by yourself.
Who is eligible: Colorado homeowners who select an enrolled participating contractor for the project. Selecting us is what starts the process. Everything after that, the application and the supporting documentation, is ours to handle.
What qualifies: high-efficiency heating and cooling equipment, with heat pump and electrification projects the clearest fit. Amounts and equipment requirements are set by the program and change by year.
How the money reaches you: the program pays you directly rather than paying us, so it does not appear as a discount on our invoice. That is deliberate and it works in your favor. Adding the rebate to the price and then subtracting it would leave the net you pay exactly where it started, so we quote the real number and the program money comes to you separately, on top of it.
United Power Rebates for Brighton, Erie, and Weld County Homes
United Power gets its own section here because homes on the co-op are the ones most often given the wrong information. If United Power bills your electricity, Xcel Energy's residential electric rebates do not apply to you, no matter how many search results say otherwise. United Power runs its own program with its own equipment requirements, and it is narrower than Xcel's.
Who is eligible:
United Power members. That covers homes in Brighton, Erie, and the Adams and Weld county communities at the northern edge of our coverage, and membership can vary block to block, so we check by address. This is the smaller end of our service area, so tell us up front if United Power bills your power and we will look at the program before we quote anything.
What qualifies: heat pumps. United Power's heat pump rebate is $1,000. The program does not cover
ductless mini split systems, so a ductless project on a United Power address is priced without a co-op rebate behind it.
How the money reaches you:
United Power pays the member after the install. We assemble the documentation and file it for you.
One note that matters on the gas side: a home can be on United Power for electricity and Xcel Energy for natural gas at the same time. That means a furnace rebate and an electric heat pump rebate may come from two different programs on the same project. Sorting that out is part of the estimate.
How the Colorado Heat Pump Tax Credit Works
This is the program most often described incorrectly online, so here is the actual structure. It is not a percentage, it is not claimed on your tax return, and you do not file anything for it.
Who is eligible: homeowners installing qualifying heat pump equipment at a Colorado residence through a heat pump tax credit contractor registered with the Colorado Energy Office. The contractor's registration is what makes the credit available on a given project.
What qualifies, and what it is worth: the credit is a flat amount by equipment type.
- $1,000 for an air-source heat pump
- $2,000 for a ground source, water source, or combined-source heat pump
- $250 for a heat pump water heater
How the money reaches you: off the invoice. The registered contractor claims the credit on their own Colorado Department of Revenue filing and is required to pass at least one third of its value to you as an upfront discount on the installation, itemized on the invoice as a State of Colorado Heat Pump Discount. The minimums work out to $333, $667, and $83 for the three equipment categories above. Homeowners file no paperwork for this program at all.
Registration is specific to the contractor, so if this credit matters to your project, ask any contractor you are considering whether they are registered with the
Colorado Energy Office before you sign. Program amounts and requirements are published by the state and change by year.
Where Federal Energy-Efficiency Credits Stand Now
The federal 25C energy-efficient home improvement credit terminated on December 31, 2025. It is not allowed for any property placed in service after that date, so a system going in today does not earn it.
For a new install, the money is in the utility rebate programs and the state heat pump credit, and that is where we point homeowners. We will not build a federal credit into an estimate that will not be there when the return is filed.
We Do the Rebate Paperwork, on Every Program We Participate In
The failure most homeowners worry about is real: buying the system first and discovering afterward that the model, the efficiency rating, or the filing window disqualified it. The order of operations is what prevents that, and the filing is ours rather than yours on every rebate program we participate in.
Step 1: Confirm the utility and the eligibility
We identify who bills your electricity and your gas, then determine which programs your address actually qualifies for, before anything is quoted as a final number.
Step 2: Select equipment that meets the specification
Rebates hinge on efficiency ratings and, for heat pumps, on
cold-climate performance at low outdoor temperatures. We size and select equipment that clears the program's threshold rather than one that merely fits the space.
Step 3: Document the install
We capture the invoice detail, model and serial numbers, and system documentation the applications require, at the time of the install and not weeks later.
Step 4: File within the program window
Applications go in inside each program's submission window, with the supporting paperwork attached. You do not chase a utility, assemble a packet, or track a deadline.
Qualifying equipment being available matters as much as qualifying for the rebate. As a Trane Comfort Specialist and Trane TCS Dealer and a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor for ductless systems, we stock and install the high-efficiency and cold-climate models these programs are written around, so a qualifying system is a normal install for us rather than a special order with a lead time.
What You Owe After the Rebates Come Off
Rebates and credits reduce the number, and financing covers what is left. Wells Fargo Home Projects financing is available on the balance, subject to approved credit, so a high-efficiency system does not have to wait on a lump sum.
We serve homeowners in Thornton, Northglenn, Brighton, Broomfield, Denver, Commerce City, Federal Heights, Erie, Superior, Louisville, and Lafayette, along with the surrounding Adams, Jefferson, and Boulder county communities. Locally owned and operated since 2012, with a 5-star average across 280 Google reviews and NATE-certified technicians on every truck.
Rebate Questions Thornton and North Denver Homeowners Ask
How much is the Xcel heat pump rebate in Colorado?
A qualifying heat pump project through Xcel Energy commonly earns between $900 and $2,250 or more per heating ton, with cold-climate rated systems at the top of that range. Income-qualified households may be eligible for higher incentive levels. Program amounts and equipment requirements change by year, so the reliable number for your home comes from an estimate that identifies your specific system and utility.
Do I qualify for a Colorado heat pump rebate?
If you own a home served by Xcel Energy or United Power and you are installing a heat pump that meets the program's efficiency specifications, you very likely qualify for a utility rebate, and Power Ahead Colorado is a separate opportunity reached by choosing an enrolled contractor. Eligibility is tied to your utility and your equipment rather than to where you live in the metro. We confirm all of it before anything is ordered.
What rebates are available for a new furnace in Colorado?
Xcel Energy natural gas customers can earn a rebate on a high-efficiency gas furnace, generally in the 90% to 97% AFUE range. An 80% AFUE furnace typically does not qualify, which is why the efficiency rating on your quote is worth a close look. We tell you which of the furnaces we would install for your home clears the threshold.
How do I apply for an Xcel Energy HVAC rebate?
You do not have to. The application needs proof of a qualifying installation, including the itemized invoice, equipment model numbers, and efficiency documentation, submitted within the program's window, and we prepare and file it as part of the install. The rebate comes off your price up front and we collect the reimbursement from Xcel afterward.
Does United Power offer heat pump rebates?
Yes. United Power members can earn a $1,000 rebate on a qualifying heat pump, paid to the member after the install. The program does not cover ductless mini split systems, and it is entirely separate from Xcel Energy's rebates, so if United Power bills your electricity that is the catalog that applies to you. Many Brighton and Erie homes fall in this category.
How much is the Colorado heat pump tax credit?
It is a flat credit of $1,000 for an air-source heat pump, $2,000 for a ground, water, or combined-source system, and $250 for a heat pump water heater. The credit is claimed by a contractor registered with the Colorado Energy Office, who must pass at least a third of it to you as an itemized discount on the installation invoice, so there is no homeowner paperwork and nothing to take to a tax preparer. Ask any contractor you are considering whether they hold that registration.
